A rare and unusual Mennecy circular box with a separate flat cover, intricately moulded and painted with scattered bouquets and sprays of flowers.
Provenance: Villa Diodati, Geneva, Christie's, lot 516 (1960’s).
7.5cm Dia.
*The Villa Diodati is a mansion in the village of Cologny on Lake Geneva, Switzerland, which was rented by Lord Byron for the summer of 1816. Mary Shelley and Percy Bysshe Shelley, who had rented a house nearby, were frequent visitors at this house.
Because of poor weather, in June 1816, the group famously spent three days inside the house creating "gothic" stories to tell each other, the most famous of which was developed into the landmark work "Frankenstein," penned by Mary Shelley.
