A French painter, etcher and designer, Paul Mathey studied art in Paris under Leon Cogniet, Pils, Mazorolle and Oury. He first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1868 and received medals from that institution in both 1876 and 1885. He was also awarded te prestigious Gold Medal at the 1889 Exposition Universalle. In the same year Mathey received the chavalier de la legion d'honneur from the French Government.
Paul Mathey was held in very high esteem for his landscapes, still life' figure studies and portraits. In the latter category he both painted and etched the portraits of such fellow artists as Felcien Rops, Paul Renouard and Alfred Stevens, and of the composers Edouard Lalo and Camille Saint-Saens.
Today the art of Paul Mathey is found in many public collections, including the Museum of Luxembourg and Paris. Mathey's first etching dates from 1889. He was introduced to the medium by Paul Renouard and Brunet-Debaines. During the remainder of his career Mathey produced slight under eighty original etchings concentrating mainly upon landscapes, figure studies and portraits.
