A very rare and early Bow Mei-p'ing vase painted with a Long Eliza and The Banded Hedge amongst scattered Kakiemon flowers. The reverse is painted with a Kakiemon pattern of trailing plants and flowers, the delicate palette predominantly in orange
The vase shape takes its inspiration from a Chinese Mei-p'ing vase, which originally dates from the Sung dynasty (a shape also popular in Japan and Korea). It has a tapering body ending in a small-necked mouth. Mei, the Chinese word for prunus, or plum blossom, and p'ing for vase, so when connected literally means 'prunus vase'
